PARAGLIDER BASE JUMPS ASTORIA COLUMN
June 14, 2011A gadabout former Utah gubernatorial candidate has been arrested for base jumping–paragliding off the top of the 125-foot tall Astoria Column over the weekend. The jump was made Saturday, and a video was immediately posted on Youtube by the jumper’s friends. Then, Del Schanze hung around town. He was arrested after he was spotted at the beach, basking in the glory. He was cited and released. Outside the jail, he said the government was stifling his creativity. The city attorney calls the stunt a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a thousand dollar fine. A local paragliding guide says only a skilled jumper could make the difficult flight. He said Schanze set a terrible example that could get an inexperienced copy-cat killed.

U OF O STUDENTS DROP DEAD
May 6, 2011A group of University of Oregon students ‘dropped dead’ yesterday outside the EMU student union to protest rampant drug violence. The students picked Cinco de Mayo to make their point about what they called senseless gun violence by Mexican drug cartels–tens of thousands of victims, they said, in Mexico, South America, and the U.S. Their solution???? It’s not controlling the border better, or targeting cartel gunmen. They want people to call Congress and urge lawmakers to legalize any and all drugs that anyone wants to use any time–and de-fund the Drug Enforcement Administration. Meanwhile, the university administration is asking state legislators to approve bonding for two huge new projects on campus. They want to demolish the EMU student union and build a huge new one, and another student recreation-centered building that would have two swimming pools, and tons of space for student recreating and lounging. The U of O Vice President for Student Affairs says the 160 million dollar project is needed to make the campus ‘livlier’ for students.

WALLOWA WOLVERINES
April 26, 2011The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department says researcher Audrey Magoun had it right when she said she tracked a wolverine in the Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Photos from a remote bait-triggered camera clearly show two of the rare animals. Magoun says she turned the camera so that the next time the wolverines come back for a meal she will be able to get pictures of their underbellies and determine their sex. Wolverines are a threatened species in Oregon.

FED PROSECUTOR: OREG MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAW A “TRAIN WRECK”
April 20, 2011U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton says the majority of so-called medical marijuana ‘patients’ in Oregon don’t need the drug. He points out that Oregon–a much smaller state in population than California–has almost as many medical marijuana smokers as the Golden State. Holton says that means either Oregon is a ‘sick state’, or many Oregonians are working the medical marijuana system here. A Portland pot activist says Holton and other law enforcement professionals shouldn’t question the motives of the relatively few Oregon doctors who write thousands of pot prescriptions, saying, “did Holton go to medical school?’. And he says cops should not be able to check on medical marijuana growers to see if excess pot is being grown illegally, which is becoming more and more common. A bill that would have allowed police checks on pot growers is being held up in the Oregon Senate by Democrat Floyd Prozanski of Eugene-Springfield, who says the issue hasn’t been talked about enough publicly to move forward.

BURGLAR CALLS 9-1-1–AFRAID OF HOMEOWNER!!
March 8, 2011Once again, the Northwest makes national news for weirdness. As talked about on Rush and ABC News, Portland Police say a 24 year old man–Timothy Chapek–called 9-1-1 from inside a home he had broken into. Chapek told dispatchers–in a panic–that the homeowner had returned with two German Shepherd dogs–and the young burglar was worried that the homeowner might have a gun. He demanded immediate Police protection from the owner of the home he was illegally in. The homeowner also called 9-1-1 to say that a strange man was in his home, taking a shower, and had locked himself in the bathroom. Chapek was charged with tresspassing…..no word on if he had time to take anything.

FOR PRESIDENT—WHO????
March 7, 2011Republicans at the annual Dorchester Conference over the weekend in Seaside, Oregon, chose Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels as their top choice for president in a straw poll. Daniels got 66 votes. Next was former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with 51 votes. Sarah Palin was third with 41 votes, and Mike Huckabee got 23. Daniels has not declared for President, and is not a factor in early nationwide polling, but he also won a straw poll of Republicans in a similar Washington state get-together.
