  • A RISKY RETIREMENT SCHEME FROM OREGON DEMOCRATS

    June 17, 2015

The Oregon Legislature, dominated by nanny-state-loving Democrats who think freedom of choice is a bad thing unless it involves abortion or sex re-assignment surgery, have passed a superfluous, risky retirement scheme.  The bill passed with no talking to, or support from, Republicans.  It would force businesses to deduct more money from your paycheck and give it to the State of Oregon, which would hire costly new bureaucrats to invest the money, supposedly for your retirement, without any guarantee of any return to you.  You would have to file paperwork to get out of the system, instead of choosing to enter the system, like you do with IRA’s and 401K’s.  And, of course, Social Security already exists as a mandatory retirement savings plan, but employers match your contribution.   There is no employer match in this risky scheme.  Democrats were surprisingly honest in trying to defend the scheme, saying people won’t save unless they’re forced to.

Imagine you are in charge of the switch on a trolley track. The express is due any minute; but as you glance down the line you see a school bus, filled with children, stalled at the level crossing. No problem; that’s why you have this switch. But on the alternate track there’s more trouble: Your child, who has come to work with you, has fallen down on the rails and can’t get up. That switch can save your child or a bus-full of others, but not both. What do you do?

This question is being asked and adapted for self driving or autonomous cars about an unavoidable accident. When presented with an unavoidable lethal accident does your car swerve into oncoming traffic or drive you into a cliff to reduce the loss of life??

What would you do? Let us know what you think?

  • WE ALL GET MORE MONEY????

    June 16, 2015

Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek has proposed a 13 dollar an hour minimum wage.  If her proposal passes, the businesses left in Oregon which could afford to pay minimum wage employees would owe them 11 dollars an hour in 2016, 12 bucks an hour in 2017 and 13 bucks in 2018.   Critics point out that costs would be staggering, with an unearned raise of  almost four dollars more per hour in less than three years. Employees now making more than minimum wage would want more, too. Associated costs like Social Security contributions by employers would go up.  Businesses would lay people off, automate more, hire fewer employees, and  raise prices. Fewer businesses would come to Oregon, and it would be harder to start a new business in Oregon—SO—–there would be fewer jobs, prices for everything would be higher, and it would hurt lower income people the most.  AND—it never works when governments impose high wages or low prices….the market place works best.

Two young men died over the weekend in the water—one at Detroit Lake, and one at Wildwood Falls, near Cottage Grove.  An 18-year old senior at Sprague High School was swimming across the river at Detroit Lake when he went under.  His friends found him, pulled him out, and started CPR.  He died the next day at a local hospital.  A U of O student died when he jumped from the top of Wildwood Falls and did not surface.  Rescuers say at this time of year, be mindful of currents, the cold water, and the distance you plan to swim.  And when jumping, know what you’re jumping into.

  • DID NIKE KNOW????

    May 28, 2015

Was Nike involved in the FIFA soccer scandal??? Of course, it was.  Did Nike know about the bribes??? Maybe yes, maybe no.  The indictment talks about an unnamed American sportswear company and a 1996 deal to outfit the Brazilian team.  Nike did that deal and even bragged about it.  If it was a crooked deal, it was apparently done between crooked officials and crooked sports marketing companies——so——–Nike may not have known about it.  Nike says it never knowingly paid bribes, and is cooperating with investigators.
