  • PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS

    May 20, 2015

In this area, primary voters turned out in underwhelming numbers.  Albany’s bond issue for a new police station and fire house passed narrowly, Benton County voters trounced a proposed ban on GMO’s, Scio gets a new city charter, Stayton voters passed a fire district equipment levy, Marcola voters passed a levy for a new elementary school, and Lane County voters beat back an attempt by county commissioners to slap an extra 35 dollar fee per year for all their vehicles.

  • POSSIBLE POLICE IMPOSTERS

    May 15, 2015

In Springfield, police say an officer left two freshly laundered uniform shirts in his car overnight with his official badge and his leather-bound police notebook.  His car was broken into, and they were stolen.  So now, there may be a guy out there who looks like a real cop.  But a police spokesman says not to worry.  If you think that a cop is not a cop, as he’s chasing you, ask him for his photo id badge……or, as he’s wrestling you to the ground, call the police to verify that he’s a real cop…..or, if it’s dark and you can’t quite see him plainly, ask to go go a well-lit place, as he’s cuffing you.

  • CHEAP POT IN OREGON

    May 14, 2015

So far.  Forbes Magazine surveyed illegal pot smokers in all states (including legal smokers in Washington, Colorado, and Alaska) and found that pot is cheapest in Oregon, at an average of $204 an ounce.  It’s $232 and ounce in Washington, $242 an ounce in California.  Pot becomes legal in Oregon in July, and lawmakers are working to make it more expensive.  They want to more tightly regulate medical marijuana, so not as much of it is sold on street corners by Spike and Snake, and more pot smokers have to buy heavily taxed OLCC pot.

  • IF YOU SELL A GUN TO A BUDDY——-

    May 13, 2015

——without a background check, you’re not a criminal yet.  The universal gun sales background check bill signed into law this week has an emergency clause which is supposed to mean it goes into effect immediately.  But andi-gunner Sen. Floyd Prozanski is giving the State Police 90 days to ramp up for all the new background checks he expects.   So—if you sell a gun to a buddy, you don’t have to get a background check until August 6th, even though the law says you have to, because Floyd Prozanski and his lawyers say you don’t have to–yet.  Opponents of the bill say it is incredibly naive to think that after August 6th, buddies selling a gun between themselves will drive to a gun shop for a $50 background check.

  • KICKER OR A KICK IN THE WALLET???

    May 11, 2015

This week the Oregon Legislature gets the story from state economists…..the tax revenue story.  The last estimate, in February, included a likely 350 million dollar ‘kicker’—excess tax revenue over and above budgeted levels that is returned to Oregon taxpayers—unless lobbyists get to majority Democrats to take it away from Oregonians for their pet causes.  Kicker or ‘Kick in the Wallet’??? Ask Tina Kotek or Peter Courtney

    May 7, 2015

Apparently, really, really far.  A British man has been arrested, accused of flying from England to Eugene, Oregon, to have sex with a 10-year old girl.  Eugene Police say Gareth Hall met the girl online, chatted with her for two months, then arranged to fly into Eugene to have sex with her.  He then fled the country, but he was arrested last Saturday, when he flew into Chicago–again–for what???

  • LEBANON GETS FREE SMOKE DETECTORS

    May 6, 2015

Saturday, May 9th, volunteers from the American Red Cross will go door-to-door in the 97355 zip code from 10AM to 6PM to make sure homes have working smoke detectors.  If not, volunteers will hand them out free and even install them.  If you live in Lebanon, you can arrange an appointment in advance by calling 503-528-5783.

  • UNIVERSAL GUN SALES BACKGROUND CHECKS

    May 5, 2015

They passed the Oregon House, 32-28.  Three Democrats voted against the bill.  Two others that were counted on by Second Ammendment advocates had their arms twisted by Governor Kate Brown and Majority Leader Tina Kotek.  Opponents say the bill will do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, but will make criminals out of rural friends who sell guns to each other, and will lead to universal gun registration.  Most county sheriffs are opposed, and many say they will not enforce SB941.

    May 4, 2015

And be prepared.  Over the weekend, two hikers got lost at popular Multnomah Falls.  They were able to text a photo of a trail sign to rescuers, so they were out and safe in two and a half hours…in the dark of night.  Rescuers say that no matter the location, popularity, or length of your hiking choice, always bring: a map, a compass, a first aid kit, a flashlight or headlamp, emergency blanket, fire starter, food, water purification tablets, and a spare charged cell phone battery.

  • FREE TRADE???

    May 1, 2015

When President Obama slips into and out of Portland next week, he has his eyes on campaign cash, of course.  He will rub elbows for up to $33,000 each.  Then he will pivot to Nike, where he will talk up ‘free’ trade legislation that, if past claims versus performance are any indication, will benefit foreign countries and U.S. companies, and not U.S. workers.  The trade agreement is opposed by lawmakers on the far left and the far right, and supported by the middle ground establishment of both major parties.
