Happy Memorial Day Weekend
KFIR 720 AM wishes everyone a
Happy Memorial Day Weekend.
IT’S SUMMER!!!
The official Memorial Day weekend driving period is upon us. After you remember our honored dead, Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley has a few other things to remember: they are adding three part-time deputies this year to patrol the Quartzville corridor and Detroit areas, as camping along the road is illegal this year. Also, remember that Foster Lake will be full and Green Peter is big…….so, with many other lakes having low water problems, there will be more boats out on those two lakes this year. And remember, wear your life jacket and be ready to jump into water that is colder this time of year than you might be ready for.
PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS
In this area, primary voters turned out in underwhelming numbers. Albany’s bond issue for a new police station and fire house passed narrowly, Benton County voters trounced a proposed ban on GMO’s, Scio gets a new city charter, Stayton voters passed a fire district equipment levy, Marcola voters passed a levy for a new elementary school, and Lane County voters beat back an attempt by county commissioners to slap an extra 35 dollar fee per year for all their vehicles.
CHEAP POT IN OREGON
So far. Forbes Magazine surveyed illegal pot smokers in all states (including legal smokers in Washington, Colorado, and Alaska) and found that pot is cheapest in Oregon, at an average of $204 an ounce. It’s $232 and ounce in Washington, $242 an ounce in California. Pot becomes legal in Oregon in July, and lawmakers are working to make it more expensive. They want to more tightly regulate medical marijuana, so not as much of it is sold on street corners by Spike and Snake, and more pot smokers have to buy heavily taxed OLCC pot.
IF YOU SELL A GUN TO A BUDDY——-
——without a background check, you’re not a criminal yet. The universal gun sales background check bill signed into law this week has an emergency clause which is supposed to mean it goes into effect immediately. But andi-gunner Sen. Floyd Prozanski is giving the State Police 90 days to ramp up for all the new background checks he expects. So—if you sell a gun to a buddy, you don’t have to get a background check until August 6th, even though the law says you have to, because Floyd Prozanski and his lawyers say you don’t have to–yet. Opponents of the bill say it is incredibly naive to think that after August 6th, buddies selling a gun between themselves will drive to a gun shop for a $50 background check.
KICKER OR A KICK IN THE WALLET???
This week the Oregon Legislature gets the story from state economists…..the tax revenue story. The last estimate, in February, included a likely 350 million dollar ‘kicker’—excess tax revenue over and above budgeted levels that is returned to Oregon taxpayers—unless lobbyists get to majority Democrats to take it away from Oregonians for their pet causes. Kicker or ‘Kick in the Wallet’??? Ask Tina Kotek or Peter Courtney
